Slovak Banks Issued Over 1 Mn Europay International Payment Cards
BRATISLAVA, February 1, (SITA)--By the end of 1999, Slovak member banks of Europay International have already issued 1,020,000 Maestro and EuroCard/MasterCard payment cards in Slovakia. This represents a growth rate of 60 percent from 1998, O&M Focus informed SITA. Over 7 million payments through Europay cards in the total volume of 8.1 billion SKK were recorded in November and December 1999.
Compared to the same period one year ago, the number of transactions went up 15 percent and the total volume swelled 20 percent. During their foreign trips over the summer holiday season, Slovak citizens carried out over 60,000 payments via Europay cards, totaling 195 million SKK and withdrew further 160 million SKK through the ATM network. This is an increase of 150 percent in the volume, as well as in the number of transactions. The largest number of transactions in the summer holiday season was posted in the Czech Republic, Austria, Italy, Spain and Hungary. Among the countries where Slovaks used their payment cards were also the exotic places, such as Bahrain, Kenya, Mauritius or Nepal .
